All first-year Zetas go through the new member program, GreekLifeEdu, Initiation and Post-Initiate Education (PIE). For chapters with fall recruitment, the new member program is in the fall semester and PIE is in the spring semester. For chapters with deferred, spring recruitment, both programs are in the spring semester. These programs are under the direction of the chapter’s VPII New Member Coordinator and the Ritual Chairman.
Each 90-minute meeting includes an icebreaker, a song, short presentations on Fraternity Education/History and programming, and a sisterhood event. A 15-minute video highlights the value discussed that day. The video features ZTA National Officers, alumnae and collegians and is narrated by ESPN reporter Erin Andrews, an alumna of Gamma Iota Chapter at the University of Florida.
The New Member meeting topics and their purpose are:
The orientation meeting prepares new members for the balance of their program.
Lesson 1: Loyalty
This meeting is an introduction to ZTA’s Founders and our Fraternity’s beginning. Members begin to develop pride in Zeta Tau Alpha and validate their choice to become members. The symbols, colors, flower and open motto are part of this meeting.
Lesson 2: Responsibility
Discusses the responsibilities and privileges of Zeta Tau Alpha membership. Includes appropriate behavior, national policies, the judicial process, and accountability to ZTA at all times.
Lesson 3: Service
This meeting develops individual character and prepares new members for service to the Fraternity, the community and the world through fundraising and service projects. New members will plan a local service project.
Lesson 4: Leadership
This meeting explains the Fraternity’s organizational structure, teaches about our tradition of leadership within the Greek community and exposes new members to leadership development opportunities through campus involvement. Encourages new members to join a campus or community organization and pursue a leadership position within that organization.
Lesson 5: Commitment
This is the final meeting before Zeta Week. It ensures that new members understand the organization and the lifetime commitment required of each Zeta Tau Alpha. Reviews all the material learned up to this point to help new members prepare for the Initiation test.
