Learning the nobility of serving with Logan Gravitt Massey
Meaningful Mentorship
Logan Gravitt Massey (Lambda Eta, Virginia Commonwealth University) had a special start to her ZTA journey as a charter member of her chapter. After participating in Primary Recruitment as a junior but not finding the right fit, the opportunity to join ZTA presented itself and Logan gladly accepted. Beth Edwards (Eta Alpha, Georgia Southwestern State University), the chapter’s General Advisor at the time, became Logan’s mentor and offered her support in ZTA. “I only had a ZTA experience for two years, which is kind of crazy when I think about it, but even in that short time I got so much out of it”
Even before graduation, Logan was asking Beth how to join an alumnae chapter. That fall, she attended her first meeting with the Richmond, VA Alumnae Chapter and soon after became VP Membership. “I was so excited, I just wanted to keep being involved. I didn’t want my ZTA experience to end.” After serving in that role for two years, Logan became President of the Richmond, VA Alumnae Chapter.
Making a New Home
Due to her husband’s career, Logan relocated to Knoxville, TN, while still serving as President of the Richmond, VA Alumnae Chapter. While settling into her new home and not knowing anyone in her new city, Logan spoke with Beth on the phone about getting involved locally, and Beth connected her with one of her ZTA friends in the area, which led Logan to the next part of her ZTA journey. “We met and she asked, ‘What do you want to do?’ and I said ‘I’d love to be an advisor, Ritual has my heart and it’s something I’ve really enjoyed. Funnily enough, she said ‘I’m the Ritual Advisor for Zeta Chapter at University of Tennessee, Knoxville, but I’m moving in a month and I’ve been looking for someone to fill my role.’” Shortly after, Logan stepped in as Ritual Advisor before later becoming General Advisor, a role she currently holds.“With the collegians, I love mentoring and celebrating their wins. I have seen chapter leaders throughout the years work towards making their chapter better than when they joined, and now the entire chapter is benefiting from them reaching those lofty goals.”
While settling in as General Advisor for Zeta Chapter, the Knoxville, TN Alumnae Chapter was calling her name. Logan became chapter President, earned her Certificate of Merit during that time, and then transitioned to VP Finance, the role she currently holds. She managed to squeeze a lot of experience into a short time. “In the very beginning I wanted to meet people in my new city, and doors opened. I am that type of person that if someone needs something, I just say yes.”
Feeling the Zeta Love
One of Logan’s favorite volunteer experiences was attending Summer Leadership Academy in July 2023 and participating in the General Advisor track. She loved sharing stories with other GAs. Hearing and talking through the struggles others were experiencing helped her feel less alone and that time together filled her ZTA bucket. Beth, who resides in Virginia, attended SLA as a National Officer and they were able to catch up in person. “Beth was more than an advisor, but someone who truly cared for each one of us. She continues to support me even 12 years after being initiated and is a mentor. Seeing all that my GA did for our chapter inspired me to do the same for Zeta Chapter.”
Logan understands that everyone has different seasons of life and may decide not to volunteer due to the demand of a career, family or even relocation. “I feel like ZTA understands that and they know that this season of life is going to come and it’s going to go. ZTA is going to support you through these changes and still be there when you are ready.”
Volunteering has been a passion of Logan’s for many years, and she keeps in mind that it’s a privilege to do so. “My favorite line in The Creed is ‘To prepare for service and learn the nobility of serving, thereby earning the right to be served.’ Volunteering is something I enjoy doing. I think that’s why I continue to volunteer, because I have that passion for it, even on the hard days. It’s really rewarding in the end, the first step is just getting involved with something that you truly enjoy!”
