Remembering Janice Spradley McCarthy
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Janice Spradley McCarthy on Monday, March 11, in Oxford, Mississippi.
She was initiated at Gamma Phi Chapter (University of North Texas) in 1965. Her dedicated volunteer service to ZTA spanned several decades. She was District President XI-B from 1990 to 1994 and served as a Director at Large for the Fraternity Housing Corporation from 1994 to 1996. After serving on National Council from 1996 to 1998, Mrs. McCarthy became a Mentor for six different chapters. In 2005, she returned to the FHC board as a Director at Large, retiring in 2016. She also held multiple alumnae chapter offices in Texas and Mississippi and was Key Woman for Area II for many years.
Her ZTA sisters will remember her for her kind spirit and her wit and sense of humor, which she lent to Fun Night skits, the Strawberry Patch and the Courtesy Resolutions Committee at Conventions.
Mrs. McCarthy is survived by her husband, John; her sons, Mark and his wife, Danielle, and Michael and his wife, Sara; her twin sister, Jane Spradley Haley and her husband, Jim; and her younger sister, Susan Spradley Bell and her husband, Steve. Jane and Susan are also ZTA alumnae from Gamma Phi Chapter.
Memorial services will be held at 9:30 a.m., Friday, March 15, at Waller Funeral Home in Oxford, Mississippi; and at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 19, at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home and Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation for the Janice Spradley McCarthy Memorial Scholarship. Donors may give online at give.zetataualpha.org and note the scholarship name in the comments section, or send a check to the ZTA Foundation, 1036 S. Rangeline Road, Carmel, Indiana, 46032, with the scholarship name noted in the memo line.
The summer issue of Themiswill feature a tribute to Mrs. McCarthy.
We invite you to honor our sister by wearing a black ribbon directly below your badge for three days, as stated in the General Manual. We recommend this be done today through March 15, 2019, the day of Mrs. McCarthy’s memorial service.
