Sasha Flaksman Chases Her Singing Dreams in California

While being a part of Delta Alpha Chapter (California State University, Long Beach), I have had the pleasure of gaining a close friend in Sasha Flaksman, working with her on our Executive Council and having her in my Greek family. She is a second-year public relations major from Calgary, Canada, who grew up singing. When deciding on colleges, she knew that she wanted to be near Los Angeles, California, to further her singing experience.

At a young age, Sasha knew she loved music, so her parents set her up with vocal lessons at well-known School of Rock in Calgary. The program grew her love for singing and gave her the opportunity to do a number of shows in her community. She even performed at the Calgary Stampede’s main entertainment venue, the Coca-Cola® Stage.

Sasha enjoyed rock music, but she wanted to venture toward other genres like R&B and jazz, and was introduced to Elijah Quinn at School of Rock, who had similar ideas. Elijah had his own music setup at his home and has worked with Sasha since they met, creating and producing music.

Sasha released her first song “Contemplating” during her freshman year of college at Long Beach State. She remembers all the support she received from her ZTA sisters as they would play her song at different events and consistently send her encouraging messages. “I don’t think I would be this confident or keep doing this if I didn’t have that initial push from ZTA,” Sasha says.

In April 2025, she released her first album, “The Collection,” nine songs she created within a four-year span. Her music takes a lot from artists like Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald. However, her biggest inspiration is Amy Winehouse. Sasha relates to her Jewish background and is drawn to the unique twist Amy put on her music.

Sasha currently serves as Delta Alpha’s VP Learning & Development. She explains how this position has furthered her music career as she has learned networking skills, how to handle critiques, organizational skills and professionalism. Most importantly, Sasha is driven by the immense passion she has for school, her position and her music.

Sasha’s music can be found under the name “Fay,” her middle name. Ultimately, this is just the beginning for Sasha as she soon plans to minor in music and is already working hard on her next album. Through it all, she will have the support of her sisters by her side.

“I have been singing since I was 8 years old,” says Sasha. “I came to the U.S. to pursue a music career and found myself in ZTA. The support my sisters have given me to continue pursuing music and hopefully one day having a career as a singer is intrinsic, and I could not be more grateful to them.”
